Menus and gameplay are in Japanese.

Released by small time Japanese publisher/developer, New, Boxer's Road can best be described as a simulation. Unlike the more cartoon-inspired and arcade-style Punch Out games, Boxer's Road takes a much more realistic approach. You create your own boxer, and then begin the path to the heavyweight championship by training him however you see fit.

The game begins with you knocking on the door of your local gym. You are greeted by a scary looking short old guy, and agrees to be your coach for the long road ahead. You are then brought to a complex menu screen where you begin designing your personalized boxer however you see fit.

You choose what kind of training he will partake in (strength training, speed training, etc) and when he will do it. You decide his menu and what foods he will eat. This is important. Give your fighter an imbalanced diet, and you will quickly watch your slim and slender boxer turn into a 200+ pound doughboy. You pretty much dictate every part of your boxer's life, right down to adjusting the levels of his amino acids!.

The game switches to a 3D polygon fighter. You can watch the action from a large variety of views including a first person view, a view from ringside, a view from the ground looking up at the boxers, and a Punch Out-style behind the boxer view. When your fighter leaps into the ring to take on his current opponent, how you trained him will make a big difference on how he performs. For example, if you emphasized strength training over speed, he will be super strong, but will move very sluggishly. The key to success is trying to balance your fighter in all areas, without over-emphasizing one over the other.

The ultimate goal of the game is to build the ultimate heavyweight champion, and claim the title in the championship fight.
