Japanese folk tales are called, "mukashi banashi". They begin with a set phrase like, "Once upon a time (Mukashi Mukashi aru tokoro ni)". The characters of a "mukashi banashi" often include an old man and an old woman, or man with a name like Taro or Jiro. There are a few hundred stories that are considered standard Japanese folktales. Many Japanese grow up being very familiar with them. There was a popular TV series called, "Manga Nihon Mukashi Banashi", which is an animated version of famous folktales.
A visual novel is an interactive fiction game, featuring mostly static graphics, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage). As the name might suggest, they resemble mixed-media novels or tableau vivant stage plays.
Most visual novels have multiple storylines and many endings; the gameplay mechanic in these cases typically consists of intermittent multiple-choice decision points, where the player selects a direction in which to take the game. This style of gameplay has been compared to the Choose Your Own Adventure books.
