Capcom Generation Vol. 2: Makai to Kishi contains the first three titles of the Ghosts 'n Goblins (Makaimura) series.
* Ghosts 'n Goblins (Makaimura)
* Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Dai Makaimura)
* Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Cho Makaimura)
- Ghosts 'n Goblins is a platform game where the player controls a knight, named Arthur, who must defeat zombies, demons and other undead creatures in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin. Along the way the player can pick up new weapons, bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help in this task. The game is often considered very difficult by arcade standards and is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult games released for the NES.[citation needed] If the player loses a life, he is returned to the start of the level, or the halfway point if he has managed to get that far. Furthermore, each life can only last a certain length of time (generally around three minutes), the clock being reset at the start of a level. If the clock does run out, the player instantly loses that life.
- Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a platform game/run and gun developed by Capcom and released as an arcade game in 1988, and subsequently ported to a number of other platforms. It is the sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins, and forerunner to the Super NES game Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
The gameplay for Ghouls n' Ghosts is similar to that of Ghosts 'n Goblins. The player controls the knight Arthur, who must advance through a series of eerie levels and defeat a number of undead and demonic creatures in his quest to restore the souls stolen by Lucifer (Loki in the English-language Sega Genesis and Sega Master System versions), including the soul of his lover, Princess Prin Prin. Along the way, Arthur can pick up a variety of weapons and armor to help him in his quest.
While the core gameplay remains the same as its predecessor, the game now allows Arthur to fire directly upward and directly downward.
By jumping in certain spots, players can cause a treasure chest to erupt from the ground. By firing his weapon at the chest, players may uncover new weapons, gold armor or an evil magician that changes Arthur into an elderly man or a helpless duck. The gold armor allows players to charge up the weapon to release a powerful magical attack. Each weapon has its own special attack.
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a platform game developed by Capcom and initially released for the Super NES console in 1991.
It was later ported to the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation Portable, and the Wii Virtual Console. It is the sequel to the arcade games Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. It is perhaps best remembered for possessing immense difficulty and unforgiving gameplay.
The game is set four years after Arthur rescued Princess Guinevere from the demon Loki. They are engaged, and are about to get married. While spending a quiet moment Guinevere is suddenly kidnapped by a Red Guard.
Players once again control the Knight Arthur in his effort to save his bride Princess Guinevere from the Ghoul Realm. This time, the ruler of the Ghoul Realm is the Demon Emperor Sardius (Samael in the Japanese version).
The game is largely similar to its prequels, though it is based more on Ghouls 'n Ghosts. In Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Arthur can upgrade to the bronze armor, that enables him to upgrade his weapons, and the golden one, that allows him to unleash a special magic attack by charging the attack button. A new ability of Arthur is to double jump. While he still can't change directions in mid-air, he can change the direction when he is doing his second jump.
Also new this time around is the addition of new weapons. The Bow and Arrow which allows Arthur to shoot two arrows at once and at slightly different angles, and the Scythe, which flies along the ground.
Sticking with tradition, players have to beat Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts twice in a row, the second time with a special weapon (The Goddess' Bracelet, which only appears on a second playthrough), before being treated to the true ending.
The game was featured often on the popular Nickelodeon game show Nick Arcade, in the Video Challenge portion of the show. Unfortunately, this game was not a judicious choice for contestants, due to certain technicalities in the game -- such as being forced to wait at least seven seconds after the loss of a life, to begin the next one (the map screen is shown each time a life is lost.)
