Capcom Generation Vol 4.: Kokou no Eiyuu contains three different "Run 'n Gun"-style shooting games.
* Commando (Senjo no Ookami)
* Gun.Smoke
* Mercs (Senjo no Ookami II)
- Commando is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game released in 1985. Its influence can be seen in several later games in the genre (Who Dares Wins, Ikari Warriors, Rambo: First Blood Part II...).
It was released for several platforms, including the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Intellivision, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Amiga, Nintendo Entertainment System, Acorn Electron, BBC Micro and PC. Versions of the game also appear on Capcom Classics Collection for the Playstation 2, Xbox, and PlayStation Portable, and Activision Anthology for the Playstation 2.
- Gun Smoke is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade game created by Capcom in 1985 (its author is Yoshiki Okamoto). The game, which has a Western theme, centers around a character named (in the NES version) Billy Bob, a bounty hunter who is after vicious criminals of the Wild West. This game is considered to be one of the hardest Capcom games ever made.
Whereas Commando is a run and gun game, this game is a scrolling shooter in which the screen scrolls upward automatically and players only have three ways to shoot, using three buttons for left, right, and center shooting. However, a player can also change the way the gunman shoots through button combinations. A player can still die by getting shot or struck by enemies like in Commando but improve protection by getting special items, including a horse, for protection up to three hits; boots, for speed of movement; bullets, for faster shots; and rifles, for shot length. These items are found by shooting barrels and rifles, boots, and bullets can stock up to five.
Also, there are other items that are used for points like stars, bottles, bags, dragonflies, and cows, but two other items to watch out for are the yamachi, which is a 1up, and the cattle skull, which reduces Billy's power. There are obstacles in the game such as streams, buildings, and hills but they do not cause damage to Billy even if he is caught between the screen and the obstacle.
- Mercs is a 1990 top-down run and gun arcade game developed and published by Capcom for the arcades. It is the successor of Commando. It was followed by Commando 3 in 2008, a downloadable game.
The arcade version of the game had up to three players available for play. The players are members of a covert counter-terrorist team known the "Wolf Force". The aim of the game was to rescue the former President from rebels in the fictional African country of Zutula, which bears resemblance to the apartheid regime in South Africa. The game has six main levels, plus the final level where your mission is to rescue the president from the Hercules Transport. The game's weapons include real-world machine guns, grenades, and flamethrowers as well as futuristic plasma launchers, and several missions have pilotable vehicles available.
