Tecmo expands its Monster Rancher line with Monster Rancher Hop-A-Bout for the PlayStation. This game is a fast-paced platform jumper in which players race their bouncing characters through extraordinary obstacle courses. Along the way there are several panels which can provide all sorts of power-ups to the characters that find them.

The game features a versus mode, in which two players can race side by side through the same course. To provide further replay value, the game also comes with a level editor that allows players to design their own Monster Rancher courses.

When a player steers a monster in a certain direction, it will continue moving in that direction instead of straightening its path or stopping. To change the speed and height of their jumps, players must land on special squares. Only the controller's directional pad is used during the game, no buttons.

Monster Rancher Hop-A-Bout becomes challenging quickly, especially after the first ten rounds. There are generally multiple ways to complete each round, some of which are noticeably easier. At first the special squares that propel players forward earn them additional time and so forth are helpful in raising scores and adding to the game's enjoyment, but by level 16 it's necessary to hit them just to clear levels.
