Startling Odyssey is a series of Japan-exclusive RPG games developed by Ray Force originally for the PC Engine CD-Rom which later received remakes for the PlayStation.

The original games were Startling Odyssey and Startling Odyssey II. Contrary to their number associations, the series progressed backwards; hence, the supposed Startling Odyssey III: Miriam no Seisen, would've been the first chronologically, followed by Startling Odyssey II: Maryu Sensou, and then Startling Odyssey I: Blue Evolution.

Startling Odyssey 1: Blue Evolution is a remake of the classic Turbo CD game Startling Odyssey. The story is the same as in the original version, starring Leon Solford, a young warrior and the last in the line of great heroes, who must defeat an ancient evil and save the world.

In Startling Odyssey, the player takes the role of a young boy named Leon. One day, his home villages is attacked by monsters. His best friend is killed, and the most powerful magician of the village is turned into stone and abducted by the monsters' leader. Leon receives the blessing of the village elder and begins his quest to avenge the death of his friend and to defeat the demonic forces that threaten the land.

This is a rather traditional Japanese RPG, with all the familiar ingredients: Leon (and his companions who later join the party) roams the world map, entering towns and dungeons, buying equipment and items, and engaging randomly appearing enemies in turn-based combat. The battles are viewed from first-person perspective. Characters can use regular attacks as well as magical spells.

The game's graphics have been completely re-done, in high resolution 2D, with enhanced anime-style sequences. Battle system has also been re-done, featuring isometric perspective and a system that allows the heroes to learn and level up affinities to various elements.

Startling Odyssey 1: Blue Evolution was the only PlayStation remake to actually see release. Two planned sequels; Startling Odyssey 2: Maryu Sensou and Startling Odyssey 3: Miriam no Seisen, were both canceled.
