Published by Atlus, Peak Performance is an arcade racing game similar to the Ridge Racer series. The title features a total of 28 vehicles -- from scooters and buses to sedans and high-performance sports cars -- with each ranked according to class and housed in one of a number of virtual garages. After making a selection from the available vehicles (some must first be unlocked), players can compete against a pack of 11 AI racers on one of five different tracks: Seven Tight Corners, Uptown Driveway, Northern Country, Bay Area, and Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Additionally, each course can be attempted under a number of various weather and lighting conditions including misty, sunny, sunset, and midnight.

The multi-player mode allows two players to compete against one another in a split-screen view. The screen can be split either horizontally or vertically, but will merge when both racers are in close proximity to one another and then split once again as they drift apart. The Time Trial mode is simply a race against the clock, but it is here that a number of hidden vehicles can be unlocked for play, by either finding them on the track or beating specific race times. The included Course Edit mode allows players to create customized Time Trial courses by placing their own checkpoint markers at intervals around the track.

JAPANESE VERSION:
Toge or Touge is a Japanese word literally meaning "pass." It refers to a mountain pass or any of the narrow, winding roads that can be found in and around the mountains of Japan and other geographically similar areas, like the legendary Nordschleife in Germany.

In order to decrease the incline of mountain roads, thereby making them easier for commercial trucks to pass, engineers place a series of S bends in steep roads that provide access to and from high mountain elevations. These passes have become popular with street racers and motorsport enthusiasts because they provide a challenging, albeit dangerous, course.

Toge racing's notoriety outside of Japan may be attributed to entertainment media such as Initial D (originally manga, and later anime, and in 2005, live action under the Chinese title Tou Wen Zi D.

Touge is a series of touge racing games published by Atlus in Japan since 1995. The series was originally developed by Cave, however Touge R was developed by Nextech. As best sellers, Touge Max: Saisoku Drift Master and Touge Max 2 received re-releases in Sony's The Best line of budget range games. The gameplay focuses on import sports cars driving downhill in Japanese mountain passes using the drifting technique on curves.

Touge Max Saisouku Driver Master was released outside Japan as Peak Performance, but without the story mode. In the story mode the player starts with a Class A car and have to pass different trials to unlock new car models and circuits.

The PR mode that is a Car database is also missing outside Japan.

The game also have these other game modes that were on the other versions:
- Gymkhana: Design a circuit and race against time
- 1 player race
- 2 Player race
- Time Trial race
- Tune: Create and tune your own car.
