NBA ShootOut 2004 continues Sony's basketball series that began in 1995. While the core engine remains the same as in previous versions, the graphics have been touched up in an attempt to deliver more realistic looking players and courts. Once again players can guide their NBA team to victory using the Total Control system for precision passing, screening, dribbling, and shooting, with more than 50 authentic dunks available to finish off a play in style.

One-button controls allow players to quickly set up screens, auto defend, or perform pump fakes and special dribbles to elude the competition, with over 450 team-specific plays also available to replicate the NBA experience. All 29 NBA teams from the 2003-2004 season have been included, with both team and individual stat tracking saved to memory card during the course of a season. Broadcasters Ian Eagle and Bill Walton perform the play-by-play and color commentary, respectively.
