Natsume puts a characteristically quirky spin on classic building and social sims in Metropolismania. This PS2 game charges players with tasks familiar in two of the most important development simulations on the PC, SimCity and The Sims. Not only must the player design the layout of a new city, but also encourage a blossoming social life for its citizens. Instead of directing from the perspective of an ethereal, godlike overseer, however, Metropolismania players must build their worlds by hand, in person.
What's the biggest problem with the Information Age? It may just be that nobody talks anymore. Sure, there are e-mails and voice mails, faxes and text-messaging, but who actually takes time for a real conversation, face to face, on a personal level? Now the wisest rulers fear that this trend toward faceless, digitized conversation-by-proxy and away from honest, heartfelt exchange, may lead to the downfall of the human race.
As an especially clever and outgoing individual, the player is drafted by these shrewd leaders to spark a renaissance of friendliness in a new town. Walk the streets of the 3D Metropolismania, laying down plans for construction of new roads and buildings along the way. Good city design can lead to more content citizens. Once the city's infrastructure begins to take shape, get on the cell phone and make some friends. After earning the trust of the townsfolk, the player can make introductions and encourage residents to foster their own relationships.
Metropolismania combines the construction and building elements of the SimCity series and the life development simulation aspects of Animal Crossing and The Sims. While constructing towns, you must talk to and ensure that various townsfolk are content. A lot of the more diverse, colorful Japanese games are never ported over to America, this game being an exception; even some of the Japanese subtitles have been left intact.
