Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro is a supernatural detective Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui. The series tells the story of Neuro Nogami, a mysteries eater demon, who solved all demon world mysteries and came to the human world. To remain unnoticed amid the humans while he unravels the mysteries, Neuro uses Yako Katsuragi, a high school student, as a facade. One of the reasons that led Matsui to create a supernatural-themed manga was his inability to draw humans.
The manga was originally serialized in the Shueisha's shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2005 to April 2009. The series consists of 202 chapters collected in 23 tankobon (collected volumes). A 25-episode anime series directed by Hiroshi Kojina and produced by Madhouse was aired between October 2, 2007 and March 25, 2008 on Nippon Television. In 2011 the anime series was licensed by Viz Media and uploaded to the company's website. Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro has also spawned a light novel, two audio albums, two video games, and other merchandise.
Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro's manga has been popular in Japan, ranking frequently in the Top Ten list of best selling manga in the week. It has sold over 4 million volumes as of April 2009 in Japan. The anime, however, has been criticized by fans due to its non-faithfulness to Matsui's work, and received a poor viewership. Critical reception often compared it to Case Closed, noting supernatural as the only difference, also providing both praise and criticism.
PLOT:
The series focuses on Neuro Nogami, a demon who eats mysteries. Because he has already eaten every mystery in the demon world, he comes to the human world to feast on the mysteries offered by humans (who release negative energy from their planned crimes). As a demon, he does not wish to make his presence in the human world widely known. Because of this, he makes a deal with a 16-year-old high school girl Yako Katsuragi, who wants to solve her father's murder mystery that was declared a suicide by the police. They establish a detective agency and together with Shinobu Godai, a former criminal, and Akane, a sentient braid of hair, they solve crimes to feed Neuro's appetite. As they solve more cases, Yako becomes a popular detective in Japan, attracting even more criminal's attention.
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro: Battle Da Yo! Hannin Shugo!, a PlayStation 2 game, was also released in August 28, 2008.
