Sakura Wars is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Oji Hiroi, and is developed and owned by Sega and licensed by Red Entertainment. The franchise began as a game series of the same name, first released on the Sega Saturn video game console in 1996. As the series grew in popularity it was expanded to other markets such as manga, animation, a stage show, drama CD's, and food products.
Sakura Taisen Monogatari Mysterious Paris: Is the first original Sakura Taisen game for a non-Sega gaming console. Released on March 18, Sakura Taisen Monogatari: Mysterious Paris is a story driven entry in the popular Sakura Taisen series that ditches the series' strategy battles in favor of pure drama. Players take control of Kojirou Akechi, a detective from Japan. Akechi gets involved with the Parikagekidan as his sister is a dancer in the group. Featuring the female cast of Sakura Taisen 3, Sakura Taisen Monogatari was only released in the Japanese market.
Sakura Taisen Monogatari: Mysterious Paris takes place in Paris of the 1920's, sharing the story arc and featuring characters from Sakura Taisen 3.
In this game, the player takes control over Kojirou Akechi, a detective from Japan. His sister Miki is a dancer at Paris Kagekidan, the same organization featured in Sakura Taisen 3. Kojirou comes from Japan to Paris to see Miki performing as a front-row dancer for the first time at "Les Chattes Noires". However, upon arriving he finds out Miki's roommate Elza has disappeared. Kojirou will have to solve the mystery, that will lead him to secret dark societies that are flourishing in Paris.
Unlike the previous Sakura Taisen games, Mysterious Paris is a pure Japanese-style adventure, without any battles. The game progresses as a detective investigation, which involves talking to suspects, gathering clues, etc. In the end the player receives a title, depending on his/her PI skills. Interaction with the characters is performed using the same time-limit system as the previous two games: the player has to choose a response quickly, since silence is also considered response.
The only difference between the Asian and Japanese version of PS2 software is the distribution mark on the back of the DVD insert. The Asian version includes a Japanese game DVD and a Japanese instruction manual. As an added bonus, the Asian version includes an English quick-start guide which reveals the controls in the game.
