A visual novel is an interactive fiction game, featuring mostly static graphics, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage). As the name might suggest, they resemble mixed-media novels or tableau vivant stage plays.
In Japanese terminology, a distinction is often made between visual novels proper (abbreviated NVL), which consist predominantly of narration and have very few interactive elements, and adventure games (abbreviated AVG or ADV), which may incorporate problem-solving and other types of gameplay. This distinction is normally lost outside Japan, where both NVLs and ADVs are commonly referred to as "visual novels" by international fans. Visual novels and ADVs are especially prevalent in Japan, where they made up nearly 70% of the PC game titles released in 2006.
Visual novels are distinguished from other game types by their extremely minimal gameplay. Typically the majority of player interaction is limited to clicking to keep the text, graphics and sound moving (most recent games offer 'play' or 'fast-forward' toggles that make even this unnecessary).
Most visual novels have multiple storylines and many endings; the gameplay mechanic in these cases typically consists of intermittent multiple-choice decision points, where the player selects a direction in which to take the game. This style of gameplay has been compared to the Choose Your Own Adventure books.
Konohana'' is literally translated to ''Northen Flower'' and it is the name of the private school where this game takes place at.

- KONOHANA 1: The spring vacation was about to be over and it was the season when the cherry blossom are blooming... Momoi Meguru-kun was transferred to Konohana Private School. He planned to spend the remaining two years of his highschool life peacefully, but that wish was crushed unexpectedly. The night before the beginning of the new school year, a teacher was murdered.
Tachibana Miako-chan forced Meguru-kun to help her investigate what actually happened. So, they got involved in the dark shadow that is surrounding the school.
It is related to the school legend where a person received notices informing that person that he or she is going to die soon. The legend is called Legend of God of Death.
The player controls Meguru-kun. He is the transfer student who will be transferring into Konohana Private School, when the new school year begins. The player will have the help of Tachibana Miako that is a second year student of Konohana Private School and she named herself the president of the Journalism Club.
The gameplay is just talk to students at school to find information regarding the murder of the Swimming Coach. The player will also have to make decisions to advance in the game. Some of that decissions will take to a bad ending.
The game features an unlockable gallery for music and pictures.
- KONOHANA 2: The unlikely partnership and adventures of Meguru Momoi, Miako Tachibana and their newspaper club continue in a second outing as another school murder requires their sleuthing skills. In the first Konohana game on Dreamcast and Playstation, Meguru transferred to Konohana Private School and Miako blackmailed Meguru into helping her investigate a murder. Unfortunately for Meguru, he caught an eyeful as Miako was changing her clothes and she uses that as her wildcard to keep him in line lest she accuse him of lechery or worse.
As the new story unfolds, it's night and a mysterious fire breaks out inside a locked room at Konohana Private School, killing a young student. Near the body, a metallic plate with a strange message is found. With Miako on the case and Meguru backing her up, the two students strike out to crack the mystery. Similar to the original Konohana, the bulk of the game consists of interaction with teachers and fellow students. Conversations eventually unearth clues and leads to follow. At key intervals, important decisions must be made to advance the story, leading to different story forks and conclusions.
- KONOHANA 3 - Itsuwari no kage no mukou ni: After successfully solving murders in their past excursions, Meguru Momoi, Miako Tachibana and their newspaper club have gained something of a reputation in town. As summer vacation begins, Meguru receives a call from the manager of an amusement park with a mystery at the venue. Meguro rings up the other members of the crew and the group takes a trip to the park to solve yet another murder. The junior detectives follow clues, take cues from witnesses and question them effectively in a bid to reinforce their crime solving repute.
New game features in-game include a history mode where previous conversations may be reviewed to find relevant information and an appraisal system which rates your initiative and level of decisiveness during the investigation.
