A visual novel is an interactive fiction game, featuring mostly static graphics, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage). As the name might suggest, they resemble mixed-media novels.
In Japanese terminology, a distinction is often made between visual novels proper (abbreviated NVL), which consist predominantly of narration and have very few interactive elements, and adventure games (abbreviated AVG or ADV), which may incorporate problem-solving and other types of gameplay. This distinction is normally lost outside Japan, where both NVLs and ADVs are commonly referred to as "visual novels" by international fans. Visual novels and ADVs are especially prevalent in Japan, where they made up nearly 70% of the PC game titles released in 2006.
Visual novels are distinguished from other game types by their extremely minimal gameplay. Typically the majority of player interaction is limited to clicking to keep the text, graphics and sound moving (most recent games offer "play" or "fast-forward" toggles that make even this unnecessary).
Most visual novels have multiple storylines and many endings; the gameplay mechanic in these cases typically consists of intermittent multiple-choice decision points, where the player selects a direction in which to take the game.
Private Nurse - Maria: The game is a port of the PC love sim game. Hiroki has suffered for years from an unknown illness. Due to his weak constitution, he is unable to live like a normal schoolkid and often has to depend on his best friend Ayano to take care of him. When he can attend school, he often spends most of his time in the nurse's office. Ayano cares for Hiroki more than she is willing to admit, and Hiroki repeatedly pushes her away due to his embarrassment at being unable to "be a man" and fend for himself.
One day, an outlandishly-dressed girl named Maria drops in, and cheerfully tells Hiroki that she is to be his private nurse for one month. Maria will live with Hiroki, give him her personal care, and help cure him. Hiroki is bullheaded and doesn't want to lose what freedom he has, and Ayano has mixed emotions about a beautiful girl living with her lifelong friend. Over the course of that month, a romance begins to blossom -- but with whom?
Played in flick-screen interaction sequences, players control Hiroki by answering questions and watching scenes play out. The game spans 30 days in which time the protagonist may improve his lot in life and recover from his illness. In addition to Nurse Maria, Hiroki's childhood friend Ayano Miyamori and a school nurse named Mio Sasho provide interactive foil and romantic possibilities.
