Monster Hunter is a third-person action RPG, similar in style to EA's The Lord of the Rings games or Sony's Champions of Norrath. Monster Hunter features both online and offline components, allowing players to adventure on their own or form a party, with up to three friends, for a cooperative adventure using the PS2 Network Adaptor.

As in most role-playing games, players begin by creating a character and customizing their hero's appearance, voice and other attributes. Monster Hunter also has players creating and customizing their characters' equipment. While basic weapons and armor may be purchased from NPCs, the most powerful items in the game are made by the players' characters themselves, from the hides, teeth, scales, claws, and other parts of conquered monsters.

The game is played out through missions you take from the Hunter's Guild (or the village elder if you're playing solo), and these missions range from material gathering, to egg stealing, and even live capture. Combat is all real-time. The left analog stick moves your hunter while the right stick is actually used for attacking. Different directions on the stick trigger different types of attacks, even allowing for some simple combos.

The story in Monster Hunter is a very basic one. You want to be the best Hunter ever, so you go out to prove yourself.

With online multiplayer scenarios, gamers can participate in group sessions of up to four players working as a team to vanquish powerful monsters and accomplish tasks. For instance, work collectively to create traps for unsuspecting monsters or distract a monster's attention as a friend tries to escape from a dragon's nest, toting an enormous egg. Moreover, new quests and items will be available for use on the network. Monster hunters will be overwhelmed by the possibilities that online play lends itself as Monster Hunter reveals the expansive world that awaits them.

Features:
* Richly detailed and diverse environments. Explore breathtaking landscapes that are richly detailed and marvel at the surroundings that encompass the world of Monster Hunter
* Online and offline gameplay options
* Up to four friends can play simultaneously online to hunt monsters and accomplish various objectives or choose to single handedly complete missions offline.
* Village Lobbies: Villages within Monster Hunter have lobbies which allow many online players to chat and join up to create hunting groups and accomplish missions
* Character customization: Players can create and modify their main character. Various customizable attributes include name, gender, hairstyle, face, and voice
* Create your own unique equipment Not only can weapons and armor be obtained by purchasing them, but can also be created from monster claws, scales and various materials collected
* Upgradeable artillery such as swords and cannons
* Expanded online content: For additional replay value, new quests featuring unique sets of enemies and objectives can be accessed online. Special items can be rewarded to players for completing only these new missions.

MONSTER HUNTER G:
Monster Hunter G is a Japan-exclusive game for PlayStation 2. It is an expansion to the original Monster Hunter with more quests, weaponry, and different color variations of its existing monsters. Due to the series lack of popularity overseas, this PS2 title never made it outside of Japan. In 2006, however, Monster Hunter Freedom was released for the PSP, which is essentially the equivalent of MHG.

New additions and features:
- Monster color variations and sizes
- New skill system that was operated by numbers rather than armor
- New "G" rank quests
- Hire Felyne chefs to cook stat-boosting (or lowering) meals
- Kokoto Farm, to acquire materials within the village
- Training School
- New sharpness levels: Blue and White
