Indeed clasified as "action RPG", but that's not very accurate to be honest. The game's focus seems to be the learning (and creation) of magic in a simulation, static screen fashion which reminds me of Gust's Atelier series or even Princess Maker.
In order to do that, you have to move through different locations, which is where you do control your sprite in a 3D environment not unlike Grandia's world. It's there where you have enemy encounters and find items and ingredients. So the game's quite text heavy. It's not the usual RPG and menus are in full kanji. The game features a 2d first person perspective in the story part and third person perspective 2d characters and a camera angles that the player can zoom in and out and rotate 360 degrees.
