BattleTanx: Global Assault makes its PlayStation debut with more levels than the earlier Nintendo 64 version. Split-screen multiplayer support is also included, but for two players instead of four. The fast-paced action involves motoring across grid-like environments in one of 13 well-outfitted tanks. Solo players can complete 40 search-and-destroy missions in the campaign mode, while up to two friends can blast each other to scrap metal in seven deathmatch, capture-the-flag, and tag variants. Twenty power-ups are available in total, ranging from cloaking and teleporting devices to plasma bolts and guided missiles. Featured levels take place in futuristic versions of San Francisco, Washington, London, Paris, and Berlin, all of which are home to ruthless, tank-driving gangs.
Prior to the game's beginning, Griffin Spade set about reclaiming his lost love and establishing his tribe in San Francisco. But the peace he'd blasted out for himself looks to be short-lived as he's having frequent nightmares about a sinister QueenLord. It's up to Griffin to mount up again and with all the finesse that a giant tank can muster and solve the mystery behind this evil woman. And so the stage is set for Battle Tanx: Global Assault.
Global Assault puts you in the driver's seat of a powerful tank as you blast away at your enemies. The game offers multiple play modes including Campaign mode, 2 Player Campaign mode, and a multitude of multiplayer modes. If you don't feel up to supporting your friend in the two-player campaign mode, you'll have a chance to blast your friend's pathetic turret off in the Deathmatch mode. For a dash of variety however, other modes include: Battlelord mode, Frenzy mode, Hold 'Em mode, Family mode, and Tank Wars mode.
You'll also get the option as you play to buy new tanks to better fit the levels your fighting in. Earning cash in the form of Tank Bucks will allow you to ultimately select from up to thirteen different tanks ranging from the popular all purpose M1A1 to the more whimsical Hovertank or the bigger beasts like the Rhino or the Goliath. Players start with thirty Tank Bucks, but can quickly accumulate more by collecting power-ups or by the straightforward ten Tank Bucks per ten thousand points. If you find that you've run out of cash and your last ride's a smoldering crater on the Campaign mode, expect to see the game-over screen appear.
Battle Tanx is powered by a polygon-based engine to better reflect the nature of futuristic tank combat. You'll prowl though 3D futuristic landscapes dodging enemy flak and other nasty explosions as you dart between buildings and level national monuments of nations that few still remember.
So grab your gun and drag the tank it's attached to along with you to the battlefields of the future. Don't bother to tread lightly however, the enemy certainly won't.
