Like NFL Blitz, NFL Xtreme is football without rules, and features exaggerated tackles, late hits, and high-scoring affairs. To make the action more up-tempo than ordinary football titles, Xtreme uses a five-on-five setup, which puts an emphasis on skilled position players (quarterbacks, running backs, linebackers and cornerbacks).
Though different in style from simulation franchises such as NFL GameDay and Madden, NFL Xtreme features real stadiums, players, and teams from the 1998 NFL season. Additionally, Xtreme features three modes of gameplay: exhibition, season, and playoffs.
For customization, several options are provided. In create-a-player, gamers can create their own extreme player, who can then be signed to any NFL franchise. As for team customizations, players can release, trade, and draft players to an NFL team. Finally, the game features a draft mode, where all the existing players in the game are redrafted by teams. NFL Xtreme is for one or two players and supports the Dual Shock controller.
