NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC is designed after the NBA Jam series. First, you choose whether or not you want to create a profile for yourself. After that, you choose any team that you wish to compete as. Using your profile, you try to advance your way up through the ranks of the NBA. The team you select can be modified by your choice of players.

For example, the Knicks are composed of Marcus Camby, Latrell Sprewell, Alan Houston, Patrick Ewing, and others. You pick the two players that you wish to have on the court during each half; at halftime you are allowed to substitute them for either one or both.

The Create-A-Player mode allows you to make your very own superstar. You are in charge of setting a nickname (from a pre-selected menu) and set the players head, number, attributes and privileges (including stealth turbo, big head and hotspot). You are given a certain amount of points to allocate to your player and you get more points after winning a certain amount of games.

NBA Showtime supports analog control and the Multi Tap Adapter for up to four players, as well as one block of memory for saving. The game also uses NBC camera angles.
