A first-generation tennis title made available shortly after the PlayStation's launch, Ground Stroke offers basic singles or doubles match options. The roster of eight players consists of four men and four women, none of whom are licensed professional players, but obvious caricatures thereof. The full roster includes Andre Legacy, Bart Sunrise, Steve Edwards, Mike Lee, Rusty Guriffis, Angela Santos, Julia Cappuccino and Kumiko Abe.
Before beginning a game, options such as the number of sets (one, three, or five) and the court type can be set. The latter includes grass, clay and hardcourt surfaces. Though each player has specific attributes, each is capable of performing a standard array of strokes including drop and lob volleys, slices, top spin shots, approach shots, and overhead smashes.
New players can be "registered," allowing for in-game tracking of their win-loss record, including win ratios in singles and doubles play as well as the overall winning ratio of each player. Different camera angles and perspectives can be selected, and during two-player competition it's possible to play with a horizontally or vertically split-screen. At the conclusion of a match, a summary is displayed detailing the aces, double faults, winners, unforced errors, break points won, and first-serve percentage achieved.
