Um Jammer Lammy, the sequel to the PlayStation's first music game PaRappa the Rapper, is more than just a new collection of songs. This interactive game is focused on an entirely new character and has different styles of music, multiple musical contests, and an electric guitar to rock out on rather than rapping.

You assume the role of Lammy, the unconfident guitar player for Milkcan -- one of the city's greatest garage-rock bands. Like PaRappa, the more you play, the more the story begins to unfold. As time goes on, Lammy will slowly gain confidence and improve his skills in the genres of rock, punk, heavy metal, and pop-rock tracks.

The idea is to impress your teachers in each stage by keeping up with the rhythm. If you're successful, Lammy is awarded Effecters -- items that are used to provide a little extra oomph to your guitar licks. When you earn them, you'll be able to break out with some wah-wah effects as well as distortion and pitch bends -- using them correctly will help your overall ranking in each stage (based on PaRappa's system of cool, good, bad, and awful).

Um Jammer Lammy allows you to challenge a friend in a head-to-head guitar-playing bonanza as well as save and watch your own games in the replay mode. For those of you wondering, PaRappa makes a guest appearance but whether or not you'll be able to find him depends on your skill...so grab your guitar and start practicing!

Um Jammer Lammy is in the same vein as PaRappa the Rapper and includes six "lessons" with a new teacher for each. These teachers include the return of Chop Chop Master Onion, firefighter Chief Puddle, pilot Captain Fussenpepper, country bumpkin Paul Chuck, caterpillar nurse Cathy Pillar, and pop glamour Teriyaki Yoko.

As you progress in Um Jammer Lammy, players earn new effects and other electronic add-ons for their guitars to produce even more complicated music, including pitch bends, distortion and reverb. The addition of the Cooperative Play mode allows players to play in co-op with Rammy, who can be either played by a second player or the computer. The same holds true for the Competitive Play mode, but instead this mode allows players to challenge Rammy in a "Vs." battle.

Options also include the ability to save replays, use the Dual Shock controller to prompt when it is your turn to go, options to select two difficulties, save options, language and subtitle selection as well as hi-score viewing.

In the United States, Hell has been replaced by a desert island, and the FMV segments surrounding the level have been altered. It doesn't really affect the game too much, since much of the game doesn't make a lot of sense to begin with. Also, the song that played over the credits in the Japanese version has lyrics in the domestic release.

  Manufacturer's description:

There is a new rock star in town. Where Lammy goes mosh pits follow. She's the guitar-slinging megastar of an all-chick band called Milkcan. Help Lammy make it to her big gig on time by jamming to rock, heavy metal, punk, pop and other killer riffs.
You can even take on another player to an awesome two-player mode.
Um Jammer Lammy, yeah...it rocks
