This release is designed to provide the authentic, full-featured deer hunting experience of earlier releases through some of the most realistic 3D environments the series has offered to date. Six firearms and two bows are available in this hunting sim, as well as other important equipment. Virtual outdoorsmen can enter the "Mission" or "Quick Hunt" modes of play to track down Whitetail, Blacktail, Fallow Deer, Sitka Deer, Desert Mule, or Rocky Mountain Mule deer through one of six areas of varied terrain. Animals are designed with artificial intelligence particular to each species. A day and night cycle and various weather conditions affect the hunt and add to the realism.

Cabela's Ultimate Deer Hunt: Open Season, developed by Coresoft Games, is roughly based on the original 2001 PC game by nFUSION Interactive, but features a few different hunting locations and weapons
