The fourth title in Electronic Arts' Need for Speed series on the PlayStation, Need for Speed: High Stakes offers nineteen high-performance sports cars to collect and customize as you set out to prove you're the fastest driver in the world. Are you up to the challenge?
Some of the vehicles you'll be able to drive include the following: a Porsche 911 (making its series debut), Mercedes SLK 230, BMW Z3 Roadster 2.8, Chevrolet Camaro Z28, Pontiac Firebird T/A, Aston Martin DB7, Jaguar XKR, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari F50, McLaren F1 GTR, and a Lamborghini Diablo SV.
Yet before you can slide into the car of your dreams, you'll have to first purchase it using money accumulated from tournament competition. Players begin with 20,000 credits and will initially be able to access three tracks: Landstrasse, Germany; Route Adonf, France; and Kindiak Park, Canada. To open up more tracks, earn additional credits and access hidden cars, players must place within the top three of each race. Of course, those who damage their vehicles will have to spend part of their earnings on paying the repair bill!
That's right, Need for Speed: High Stakes includes visible car damage that affects how your vehicle performs during a race. Besides the six tournaments to compete in (each with its own entrance fee), players are free to participate in either the Hot Pursuit mode or new High Stakes mode. The Hot Pursuit mode picks up where 1998's game left off, only this time you can play as the police and chase a series of speed-violators within a time limit. For every lawbreaker you nab, more seconds will be added to the clock. Other modes include Test Drive, Single Race and Special Events.
High Stakes mode lets you prove your driving prowess against a second player with your car on the line. The catch? Drivers who lose the race will automatically have their car erased and added to their opponent's memory card! Other notable features include three difficulty levels, eight Special Event races, two-player racing on a split screen, your choice of automatic or manual transmission and three types of upgrade packages: suspension and tires, engine and brakes, and improved aerodynamics. Other options let you pick the weather, traffic conditions and even night driving features.
