Genesis owners who remember the first three Thunder Force games may wonder what happened to the fourth (and last 16-bit) title in the series. Here in the states, the game was (for reasons unknown) called Lightning Force. Now, the fifth game in the series hits the PlayStation. Just like in the four previous games, Thunder Force V: Perfect System is a side-scrolling shooter in the tradition of R-Type and Gradius.
Set in a grim future where a once-benevolent alien technology has turned against humanity, Thunder Force V puts you in the role of an ace pilot in charge of saving the Earth from total annihilation. You must fly the RVR-01 Gauntlet, a duplicate of the original Vasteel, through wave after wave of metallic predators and enemy bosses.
Your ship is equipped with five different weapons: Twin Shot, Back Shot, Wave, Free Range, and Hunter. Each weapon can be upgraded with multiple power-ups. At any time during the game you can switch between weapons, depending on which one you think will work best against a specific enemy attack. Shields, extra lives, and CRAWs can also be picked up. The CRAW(s) orbit around the ship and defends it from incoming bullets. Also, using the CRAW enables you to activate the Over Weapon -- a device that increases the normal weapons' power.
Features:
- The Thunder Force series makes its 32-bit debut
- Acquire five distinct weapons and power them up to new levels
- Unlock new challenges by completing the game
