Gunparade Orchestra is a sequel of Gunparade March. It’s a sequel in the sense that they are (supposedly) set in the same universe, but there is no real continuity from the first series. In fact, the GPO has quite a different feel in terms of character and mecha designs that give it a lighter atmosphere.
Just like in the original series, GPO is about a world that has been plagued by monsters called genjuu for fifty years and Japan is one of the few places on the planet still holding out. A Diet act was passed to conscript children to be pilots for HWT (Humanoid Walking Tanks), a new weapon developed by the Shibamura Group in 1978. Each high school has a company of HWT pilots and areas designated for military use. The pilots are drafted from the school population based on compatibility tests and have a seperate class of their own. In the original series, there was also a special genetically modified child who was responsible for activating PBE bombs which generate mini-blackholes that are used to destroy genjuu brain units.
The main character is Sara Ishida, a graduate of an elite officer-training school called Shinbudai in Tokyo. She has been assigned as company commander in a remote division located somewhere in Tohoko (northeast of Japan), where the scenery won’t be out of place in Siberia.
Shiro no Shou is the first part of a PS2 trilogy in the Gun Parade series. Gun Parade Orchestra expands on the mech-based battle events of the previous title, utilizing a unique fighting system, AI-controlled characters and freedom to explore your options. Players make use of mechs in battle as they interact with the members of the 108th Security Unit working in Japan's snowy Hokkaido region. You'll have to communicate with your students, making use of a "view" command to check up on their status. Outside of the classroom, the game features a battle system in which you make use of a variety of weapons as you lead the students against a mysterious group of beasts that have invaded the Earth.
The first salvo in the new Gun Parade Orchestra trilogy is subtitled "Aomori Penguin Densetsu." The Aomori Penguin reference is fairly evident within the first hour of game play when the player meets a trench coat wearing penguin that waddles around campus. The timeline is December 1999 in an alternate reality where World War II was followed by something even more ominous. Alien creatures known as Genju mount an attack on mankind and decimate the populate. With massive casualties, the defense forces have to rely on teenage soldiers as soon as they're of age to go into battle. With attacks mounted by the Genju in impromptu fashion, air raid sirens still sound the alarm whenever invaders breach the defense perimeters of the town where the protagonist lives.
In the case of Gun Parade Orchestra, the Genju consist of wiry humanoid creatures, massive scorpion-like beasts, and other exotic monsters dreamt up by the team at Alfa System. As a recruit of the 108 Security Division which protects the peace in a town located in Hokkaido, players lead a team of armor-suited warriors to beat back threats whenever the sirens ring out their clarion call. At other times, the player/protagonist is a normal student who goes to high school, interacts with fellow students, and lives a relatively normal life.
