Le Tour de France is the first cycling game for the ps2 that has a second game in the series by the same company Le Tour de France Centenarie Edition.
Tour de France showcases both the skill and endurance needed to succeed in the quest to secure the Maillot Jaune--the yellow jersey awarded to the winner of each race--and truly conveys the stamina needed to complete the six-stage competition. As befits the official game of the world-renowned tournament, the game adheres to the rules of the tournament while faithfully recreating the many towns and locations the racers pass through.
This level of detail also extends to the gameplay: players opt to participate in training sessions, short arcade races or the long haul of the actual Tour de France. In this mode, the user begins the tournament as a novice competitor, gradually building their pace and strength via local training sessions and races in preparation for the main event.
As players finish first in these trials, points are awarded that allow them to upgrade their bike or even transfer to a more dominant racing team. Tour de France also delights in detail: players must ensure that their rider is kept refreshed with drinks during a race, while also mastering bursts of speed and rests.
The endurance of the player is marked via a bar shown in the corner of the screen, and pushing the rider too hard will see a noticeable reduction in speed until the bar is replenished. Other additions include variable weather conditions, official teams and bikes and fully customisable riders, while the save game option will be invaluable during the long haul of the main event.
GAMEPLAY:
The premise of Le Tour De France is basic take part in local races to build up your bike and career to enable you to race in the biggest cycling race itself but its not just the case of pedalling as fast as you can around France…
The games biggest evolution and stand out point from the rest comes from its Stamina bar. Once in the race there are 3 ways to pedal. The first is to hold down X that lets you pedal along leisurely, the second is repeated press X to stand up and pedal fast, which in turn depletes your stamina, and the third is to not press anything and not pedal ideal from gaining stamina on downhill sections. Push too hard and your stamina will run out and you’ll retire from the race. The ways to get back your stamina are to ride in the slipstream of other riders, which is a task in itself, or to take one of your five drinks your allowed per race.
On top of all the stamina worries are the fact that you can crash and take on damage to yourself. Damage results in losing a segment of your stamina bar for the rest of the race, which makes the race even tougher for you. Crash too many times and you’ll retire as well.
The game features 5 different game modes: Arcade. where the player competes freely on any of available tracks, Tour de France, where the player aims to win the prestigious competition in five years, by training and winning enough money to afford better bike parts and training sessions, Time Trial (racing against the clock) and train basic skills.
