In the "spirit" of movies like Beetlejuice and games such as Haunting Starring Polterguy, Ghost Master has players in the role of an afterlife civil servant charged with the task of scaring away humans from their homes and workplaces. Ordered by the Haunter Committee to remove the townsfolk of Gravenville, players assemble a team of ghosts, ghouls, gremlins, and other beings from the netherworld to carry out the task. The game offers parodies of horror movies as players focus on channeling psychic energy throughout the 3D locales. The goal is to increase each dwelling's fear factor so the residents pack up and leave.
Ghost Master casts you as an afterlife civil servant whose job is to frighten lowly mortals from their homes and places of work. You'll have command over legions of ghosts, ghouls, and spirits to help you with this task. In addition, you can use a wide range of scaring tools to drive out unwanted guests. Ghost Master also features a simple game interface, intelligent enemies, and enhanced graphics.
Ghost Master puts the player in the role of a new Ghost Master; a spirit assigned the task of cleansing certain locations of all human activity. They will harness psychic energy, known as plasm to generate all manner of ghostly and psychic phenomena - literally scaring all the people away. The player makes use of the history of the site he or she is assigned to haunt, and gradually builds up enough plasm to summon ghosts and spirits from the Spirit World. These spirits help the player build up the Fear Factor, and eventually do drive away the mortals and achieve victory.
The game is not a direct port of the PC game Ghost Master. Instead, Spiral House was contracted to modify the original codebase by Sick Puppies to make it more user-friendly for the consoles. This includes a complete overhaul of the interface to make commands easier to access, the introduction of battle elements - next to the regular missions - to speed up the game's pace, a more linear game structure, and a redesign of the control over ghosts. They now have less AI and there is more variety in the types, requiring you to tap wisely into the plasm pool to deploy the most adequate ghost for each situation.
