Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, known in Europe as Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call, is a role-playing video game for the PlayStation 2. It is the third main game in the Shin Megami Tensei series. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was released nine years after Shin Megami Tensei II, and was the first Megami Tensei game in the series to be released into the United States using the "Megami Tensei" name.
The player takes control of a half-human half-demon silent protagonist whom the player names. His journey in the resulting Vortex World begins once he has been granted demonic power from a Magatama given by a mysterious boy. The version released in the English-speaking regions is actually a director's cut version from Japan. The game has been well received by video game publications based due to its gameplay and atmosphere. The game's story has many possible endings, depending on the decisions the main character makes.
The Shin Megami Tensei (which has been translated as "True Goddess Rebirth," but is often converted to "Digital Devil Story" in English) brand began with Japanese releases for the Super Famicom, and continued on North American PlayStations with Revelation Series: Persona and its sequel Persona 2. While games in the series seldom share common characters or settings, all are designed to promote a certain freedom in role-playing, by offering moody, interactive game worlds and ample opportunity for creative character development.
A new battle system where the player is assigned Press Turns equal to the size of his party (although a special event allows the player to gain an extra press turn) and can re-use some of them by scoring Critical Hits or exploiting elemental weaknesses. In contrast, if the attack is nullified or reflected, the player loses some or all of his press turns based on the severity of the defense. This also applies to the opposing side.
Like most of the earlier games in the line, Nocturne presents a mature story, with more realistically complicated characters than the stereotypical Japanese console game. The North American edition of the game is an enhanced version of the Japanese original, and features a cameo appearance from Devil May Cry's Dante.
