This single-disc collection, brought Stateside by Conspiracy Entertainment, comprises ten remakes of popular games from Sega's 8- and 16-bit eras which were previously available for PS2 in only Japan and sold individually. In addition to honest emulations of the games, new play modes, game options, and extras are available as well. Included are versions of Alien Syndrome, Bonanza Bros., Columns, Fantasy Zone, Golden Axe, Out Run, Space Harrier, Super Monaco GP, Tanto-R, and Virtua Racing: Flat Out.
MONACO GP:
Monaco GP is an arcade game that was released by Sega in 1979.[2] The game was released in three cabinet styles, a vertical upright cabinet, a cocktail table and sit-down 'deluxe' cabinet. A sequel, Pro Monaco GP, was released in 1980.,[2] and was later followed by Super Monaco GP and Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. Monaco GP was ported to the SG-1000 in 1983.
FANTASY ZONE:
Fantasy Zone is a surreal arcade game released by Sega in 1986. It was later ported to a wide variety of consoles, including the Sega Master System. The player controls a sentient spaceship named Opa-Opa who fights nonsensical invader enemies in the titular group of planets, full of settings atypical of the traditional scrolling shooter and pastel colors. Opa-Opa is sometimes referred to as Sega's first mascot character.[1] The game design and main character had many similarities to the earlier TwinBee, and together the games are credited with the creation of the "cute 'em up" subgenre.
Fantasy Zone was later remade for the PlayStation 2, under the Sega Ages label. Although similar in appearance to the arcade version (even incorporating the original arcade sounds), this version used polygons instead of sprites and added some levels, including bonus levels in which the game takes the view behind Opa-Opa as he tries to collect coins from any boss that was defeated at the moment. The game mode is very similar to Space Harrier, or the unreleased Space Fantasy Zone. Also, even though "2UP" can be seen in the score display, this version only has a single player mode. This version was released in North America along other remade classic Sega titles in the compilation Sega Classics Collection.
SPACE HARRIER:
Space Harrier is a third-person rail shooter game, released by Sega in 1985. It was produced by Yu Suzuki, responsible for many popular Sega games. It spawned several sequels: Space Harrier 3-D (1988), Space Harrier II (1988), and the spin-off Planet Harriers (2000).
GOLDEN AXE:
Golden Axe is a side-scrolling, beat 'em up, hack and slash arcade video game released in 1989 by Sega for the System 16-B arcade hardware. It is the first game in the Golden Axe series. Makoto Uchida was the primary developer of the game and also was responsible for the creation of Altered Beast. Several ports of the game were created, most notably for the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System.
The game takes place in the fictional land of Yuria, a Conan the Barbarian-style high fantasy medieval world. An evil entity known as Death Adder has captured the King and his daughter, and holds them captive in their castle. He also finds the Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria, and threatens to destroy both the axe and the royal family unless the people of Yuria accept him as their ruler. Three warriors set out on a quest to rescue Yuria and avenge their losses at the hands of Death Adder.
An enhanced remake with 3D graphics and orchestral music was released for PlayStation 2 as part of the Sega Ages line.
BONANZA BROS:
Bonanza Bros. is a 1990 3D-style, 2D shooting platform arcade game by Sega. It is one of the earliest arcade games powered by the Sega System 24 arcade system board. Bonanza Bros. is a shooter, platform game where taking the role of one or both of the brothers, Robo (1P, red) and Mobo (2P, blue) (Mike and Spike in some PAL versions), who were modeled after The Blues Brothers. The object of the game is for the player(s) to stealthily move inside a house avoiding guards, retrieve several objects and move to the roof where a blimp is expecting the player with the loot.
There are also 2 spin-offs to the game. The first is called "Puzzle & Action: Tant-R" which was released in the year 1992, the second called "Puzzle & Action: Ichidant-R", which was released in the year 1994. These two arcade games were ported to the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Saturn, and later packaged with the Sega Ages release of Bonanza Bros. on the PlayStation 2. They are considered spin-offs as they do not follow the action genre of the original game, as they are instead puzzle games.
COLUMNS:
Columns is a puzzle video game, first created in 1989 by Jay Geertsen. Early versions of the game were made and ported among early computer platforms, and then the Atari ST, until 1990, when Jay Geertsen sold the rights to Sega, where it was ported to several Sega consoles.
The game takes place inside a tall, rectangular playing area. Columns of three different symbols (such as differently-colored jewels) appear, one at a time, at the top of the well and fall to the bottom, landing either on the floor or on top of previously-fallen "Columns"
The Sega Ages 2500 version of Columns uses an Egyptian theme and an exploration theme along with 3-D polygon graphics to recreate the magic of the original. Similar to all other Sega Ages releases on the PS2, notes on the history of the game are included inside the game package for inclusion in your Sega Ages binder (which was given away with Phantasy Star).
VIRTUA RACING:
Virtua Racing or V.R. for short, is a Formula One racing arcade game, developed by Sega AM2 and released in October 1992. Virtua Racing was initially a proof-of-concept application for exercising a new 3D-graphics platform under development, the "Model 1". The results were so encouraging, that Virtua Racing was fully developed into a standalone arcade title.
A remake was released for the PlayStation 2 under the Sega Ages 2500 label known as Virtua Racing: FlatOut. It was released in Japan in 2004 and in North America and Europe in 2005 as part of the Sega Classics Collection. It includes three new courses and four new cars.
OUT RUN:
Out Run is an arcade game released by Sega in 1986. It was designed by Yu Suzuki and developed by Sega AM2. The game was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling video games of its time and winning the Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year.[ It is notable for its innovative hardware (including a moving cabinet), pioneering graphics and music, innovative features such as offering the player choices in both soundtrack and non-linear routes, and its strong theme of luxury and relaxation. In retrospective interviews, Yu Suzuki has classified Out Run not as a racing game, but as a "driving" game.
ALIEN SYNDROME:
Alien Syndrome is a run and gun arcade game developed by Sega in 1987. Two players control two soldiers named Ricky and Mary, who must fight their way through large eight-way scrolling levels rescuing their comrades who are being held by aliens. After they have rescued a certain number of hostages the exit opens and they can pass through it in order to fight the end-of-level guardian.
The game was also converted to polygonal graphics for the PS2 as part of the Sega Ages re-release program, and included in US version of the Sega Classics Collection (it was removed from the European version to receive a lower age certificate). This version has updated controls, adding the use of both analog sticks, similar to the gameplay seen in Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV.
