Alien Syndrome is a run and gun arcade game developed by Sega in 1987. Two players control two soldiers named Ricky and Mary, who must fight their way through large eight-way scrolling levels rescuing their comrades who are being held by aliens. After they have rescued a certain number of hostages the exit opens and they can pass through it in order to fight the end-of-level guardian. If this monstrosity is defeated, they move onto the next stage. As well as two player simultaneous gameplay, Alien Syndrome features pick-ups which assist the player including better weapons and maps of the current level.
The game was also converted to polygonal graphics for the PS2 as part of the Sega Ages re-release program, and included in US version of the Sega Classics Collection (it was removed from the European version to receive a lower age certificate). This version has updated controls, adding the use of both analog sticks, similar to the gameplay seen in Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV. The original arcade game was also included as an unlockable in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
By the year 2089, man has colonized planets beyond Earth and space stations have been set up to shuttle colonists to their destinations. Without warning, squishy alien creatures attack the stations and cause a ruckus. As one of two space crusaders who have escaped capture, player takes charge and shoots, powers up and rescues hostages through various levels. At the end of each stage, a big boss hustles into view which requires a lot more firepower to turn into chunky pieces. A relentless bomb timer counts down each level and behooves one to run, explore, and destroy with the quickness before it goes off.
Similar to all other Sega Ages games, Alien Syndrome includes a history leaflet which may be bound into the Sega Ages 2500 six-ringed binder that shipped inside the limited edition of Phantasy Star SA2500.
Much like Hokuto no Ken, this one just takes the basic concept and completely reinvents the game, but somehow manages to not suck this time around. The bright graphic style from the arcade was ditched in favor of a much darker color scheme, emulating the look the Aliens movies it so loving ripped out. It can be hard to see much of anything, which may be for the best, because the graphics are pretty ugly. But damned if they didn't nail the atmosphere, especially with the brooding music. It's a much slower game, since your characters sorta slog around, but you can shoot in any direction with the right analog stick a la Robotron and Smash TV. You can also take several hits before dying.
