Cromartie High School by Eiji Nonaka, is a Japanese comedy manga, which was subsequently adapted into an anime and a 2005 live-action movie titled Cromartie High - The Movie directed by Yudai Yamaguchi. It follows the everyday life of Takashi Kamiyama and his odd classmates at Cromartie High School, an infamous school for delinquents. Both the manga and anime have been released in North America by ADV Manga and ADV Films respectively. However, the manga is not yet completely published in North America due to restructuring issues at ADV. The manga won the 2002 Kodansha Manga Award for shonen. The series began running in the United States on the cable network G4 on its Barbed Wire Biscuit late-night block and on the UK satellite channel Rockworld TV.
The series is a parody of Japanese "yankii" (juvenile delinquent) manga of the 1970s and 1980s. The style of art resembles Ryoichi Ikegami's works such as Crying Freeman or Sanctuary.[citation needed] There are also many pop culture (especially music) parodies in the characters, chapter names, episode names, CD covers, and DVD covers of this series.
Starting life on the manga proving grounds of Weekly Shonen Jump, Sakigake! Kuromati Koukou captured the attention of its audience with a cast of high school delinquents whose aspirations in life were to hang out, discuss inane subjects and act like a bunch of bad asses. Lovable bad asses. After amassing a critical audience on the pages of Shonen Jump, Kuromati Koukou made the transition from paper to celluloid when Production I.G. worked the manga into animation form and TV Tokyo started airing episodes last year.
Set in the high school wasteland of Kuromati High School, Japanese toughs, slackers, good-for-nothings and other ne'er do wells are all shuffled into one steaming pot of male testosterone. The top clique in Kuromati consists of protagonist Takashi Kamiyama and head honcho Hayashida Shinjirou. Around them, the core crew consists of the slow-witted Akira Maeda, the metallic Mechazawa Shinichi, Gorilla, and Freddy Mercury. Yes, he of the aptly named rock band Queen and Gorilla is an actual gorilla. Noboru Yamaguchi and his gang appear from time to time to provide foil against the boys from Kuromati.
