DearS is a manga series co-written and illustrated by Banri Sendo and Shibuko Ebara, credited under their pen name Peach-Pit. It was serialized monthly by MediaWorks in their magazine Dengeki Comic Gao! from March 2002 to December 17, 2005 and was later published into a ten volume set by the company. The manga was licensed and translated into English by Tokyopop. A 13-episode anime was adapted by MSJ and a PlayStation 2 video game was produced by MediaWorks.
PLOT:
Exactly one year prior to the beginning of DearS, humanity made unprecedented contact with extraterrestrial life. Forced to crash land into Tokyo Bay when, en route to their home planet of Thanatos, their spacecraft breaks down, 150 humanoid aliens are naturalized into Japanese society and affectionately nicknamed "DearS"; a portmanteau of the words "Dear" and "Friends".
Takeya Ikuhara is a temperamental seventeen-year-old Japanese student attending the fictitious Koharu High School with a strong prejudice against the DearS. Due to a childhood scare, he believes that the aliens are fake, worthless beings that have generated nationwide overhype and are secretly plotting to take control of Earth.
On his way home from school he discovers a homeless DearS who, after fainting and much to his annoyance, he feeds and shelters in his apartment. The girl, who he nicknames Ren, is infantile and friendly, and grows obsequious and dependent upon Takeya, a responsibility he tries to disassociate himself from. Her oblivious tenacity keeps her around, however, and over time, realizing Ren's genuine care and empathy for him, Takeya has a change of heart. Unfortunately, because Ren is deemed defective, DearS headquarters orders her arrested.
VIDEO GAME:
DearS is a playStation 2 love simulation/adventure game, based on the Japanese love comedy manga and anime, DearS. You play as a character who comes to live with DearS, a group of alien girls. The game features a map upon which you move around, speaking to girls and triggering new events. Characters have lots of animation for both event and conversation scenes.
In the near future, a UFO crash in Tokyo reveals the existence of aliens to the world. The stranded aliens, who come to be known as DearS, look and act much like humans, but come from a very different society. Though contact with their homeworld is soon reestablished, many DearS remain on Earth, joining human society.
DearS is a visual novel & relationship simulation game based on the manga created by Peach-Pit. The player is cast as high-school student Takeya Ikuhara, who until recently was living alone, but has had two young, female DearS move in with him: Ren and Tina, who view Takeya as their master.
The game is broken up into days, with different actions and locations available depending on the time of day and the day of the week. The player must interact with different characters to proceed through the story and further the relationships with each character. In particular, Ren and Tina can be given both presents and orders -- such as to cook dinner, or read a book -- which will increase their attributes and their affection towards Takeya. Depending on the player's actions, different events will occur, and the ultimate goal is to reach each character's "good ending".
The Limited Edition comes with an "original drama and soundtrack CD" and two "special three-dimensional portraits" (illustrations on puffy paper).
